Activity 3 Learning outcome: Determine the vertex and axis of symmetry of quadratic functions and sketch their graphs. Determine x- and y-intercepts. Graph quadratic, absolute value, square root, cubic and cube root functions using symmetry, shifting, stretching, compressing, and/or reflecting. Activity: In an experiment on motivation, a famous psychologist trained a group of rats to run down a narrow passage in a cage to receive food in a goal box. She then put a harness on each rat and connected it to an overhead wire attached to a scale. This way, she could place the rat different distances (in centimeters) from the food and measure the pull (in grams) of the rat toward the food. She found that the relationship between motivation (as expressed by pull) and position is quadratic and can be modeled by p = -0.01d2 +0.3d + 70, where p is the pull and d the distance from the food that the rat was placed. Find all x-intercepts of this curve and graph the function using symmetry, shifting, stretching, compressing, and/or reflecting as necessary.
